More than 8,000 children benefit from new schools in Manica
Save the Children has just delivered 11 primary schools (3 new and 8 rehabilitated) in the districts of Gondola and Macate, in central province of Manica, in a ceremony witnessed by the Governor of the province, Francisca Tomás. 8,357 children will benefit from these schools.
The schools are located in areas that were severely impacted by Cyclone Idai in 2019 within the implementation areas of the Star-G (Successful Transition to Advancing Girls' Rights) Project, which focuses on Education. Save the Children ensured that these new schools are resilient to the effects of climate changes.
Nine of the 11 schools and other intervention schools in the project were equipped with 935 double desks, and 1 water hole was drilled in one of the schools. In all schools, solar panel systems were installed. All this investment is the result of a financial effort of around 30 million meticais ($500,000) from various individual donors.
Save the Children Program Director in Manica, Ana Dulce Guizado, said:
“For Save the Children, all children have the right to receive quality and inclusive education and this starts with access to a school in decent conditions, complemented by the teaching process itself, which must take place with the proper quality classroom."
The handover of these schools marked Save the Children's latest intervention in response to the impact of Cyclone Idai in Manica Province. From the beginning of the response, in March 2019, to June 2021, several interventions were carried out on child protection, water and sanitation, food security and livelihoods, preparation for disaster risk reduction, health and nutrition and promotion of hygiene, emergency education and shelter.
Within its mandate and availability of resources, Save the Children will continue its commitment to contribute to the development of activities for the fulfillment of children's rights in Mozambique, particularly in education sector, as a way to ensure that children, can participate consciously and with knowledge in the development process.
