Emergencies and Humanitarian
The emergency situation in northern Mozambique, specifically in Cabo Delgado province, continues to deserve a full attention from Save the Children, its partners and donors, with the main objective of minimizing the suffering of the affected populations, especially children.
We are implementing a multisectoral program that include Health, Nutrition, WASH, Child Protection, Education and Livelihoods. Thanks to the organization's extensive physical presence, Save the Children's humanitarian activities have benefited conflict-affected communities in Pemba, Metuge, Chiure, Ancuabe, Montepuez and Mueda districts in southern and central Cabo. Delgado, as well as Erati and Memba in northern Nampula.
In 2022, and in regards to Health, Nutrition and WASH, Save the Children supported 3 health centers and their associated mobile health brigades in Chiure and Metuge. In close coordination with the Provincial Directorate of Health in Cabo Delgado, Save the Children's support included training and payment of incentives to health personnel, donation of medical supplies to facilities, rehabilitation/expansion of WASH infrastructure and provision of materials/supplies for water treatment.
With regard to Education in Emergencies (EiE) and Emergency Child Protection (CPiE), Save the Children sought to ensure that displaced children in Cabo Delgado and northern Nampula have access to education and protection services in areas of displacement .
In terms of EiE, in 2022, Save the Children supported 35 local schools by distributing school supplies, training teachers and establishing recovery and tutoring classes for out-of-school children. Furthermore, at the end of the year the SC team completed the necessary preparatory steps for the construction of temporary learning spaces to expand the absorption capacity of 10 schools in 4 districts of Cabo Delgado (Mueda, Metuge, Chiure and Montepuez). Lastly, the EiE team has also invested in setting up and strengthening commissions to reduce the risk of disasters at school level, with the aim of promoting preparedness in the face of potential natural disasters (e.g. cyclones, floods) that may hit the areas SC target, especially during the rainy season.
As for the CPiE, in its geographic areas of intervention, Save the Children systematically developed protection monitoring activities so that abuse against children is detected and treated in a timely manner, either through the direct management of cases or through referral to other specialized government service providers. In addition, CPiE field teams provided Mental Health and Psychosocial Support services to 36,288 children and parents through recreational and learning activities hosted in child-friendly spaces, parent and caregiver group sessions at various locations in Cabo Delgado and in the north of Nampula. In addition, in coordination with the Social Action services and other relevant actors, it carried out the Tracking and Family Reunification (FTR) of unaccompanied and separated children displaced as a result of the reported violent events in the affected provinces.
Lastly, with regard to livelihoods, in 2022, Save the Children made significant progress in implementing a 3-year consortium project (2021 – 2024) funded by the German government. The main objective of this intervention is to help IDPs and host communities in Montepuez and Chiure districts to restore and/or strengthen their livelihoods through the formation and capacity building of savings and loan associations (VSLAs) and the distribution of inputs farms to VSLA members.
